Couples Therapy
Intimate relationships can be a profound source of joy and belonging, and they can also develop patterns that feel stuck and painful.
Our approach helps partners interrupt cycles that are not working, understand one another more deeply, and rebuild a felt sense of safety, responsiveness, and connection.
We work from an integrative depth lens with practical focus. Sessions center on the bond between you, the emotions and meanings that drive conflict, and the habits that keep the cycle going. Our clinicians draw from relational and attachment based perspectives, Emotionally Focused and systems work, Relational Life Therapy, and psychodynamic understanding. We are active and collaborative, offering clear structure and direct, respectful feedback about patterns that may be sustaining distress, while coaching new ways of reaching, listening, repairing, and setting boundaries.
Our team includes clinicians with additional training in clinical sex therapy. We support concerns such as desire differences, arousal and satisfaction, sexual avoidance after rupture, performance anxiety, and communication about needs and fantasies, always at a pace that feels safe.
We welcome diverse relationships, including interfaith and interracial couples, 2SLGBTQ+ partnerships, and those exploring or practicing ethical non-monogamy. Care is inclusive and affirming, with attention to culture, identity, power, trauma, family systems, and social stressors that shape how partners find and keep one another.
The goal is a relationship that feels steadier and more alive, where differences can be negotiated, hurt can be repaired, and intimacy can grow.
“Maturity comes when we tend to our inner children and don’t inflict them on our partners to care for.”
― Terry Real
Couples Therapy FAQs
-
Couples therapy is a collaborative process that focuses on improving the communication and emotional connection between partners. During sessions, we'll work together to identify and address the issues that are impacting your relationship. This may include exploring patterns of behaviour and communication, improving intimacy and affection, and finding ways to build more trust and understanding between you and your partner.
-
The length of couples therapy can vary depending on the unique needs and goals of each couple. Some couples may only require a few sessions to make significant progress, while others may benefit from ongoing therapy over a longer period of time.
-
We can schedule sessions for either weekly or every other week. Consistent sessions are crucial for meaningful progress. As you feel more secure in your relationship, sessions can shift to a monthly basis for maintenance and continued support.
-
Couples therapy can be helpful for any couple looking to strengthen their relationship, address issues of communication or intimacy, process ruptures that occurred earlier in the relationship, or navigate a challenging life transition. If you and your partner are struggling with conflict, feeling disconnected, having issues around trust, or simply looking to deepen your emotional connection, couples therapy may be a good fit for you.
-
Many extended health benefits do cover couples therapy, but coverage varies by plan and by the clinician’s designation. Please check with your insurer about your specific benefits and any limits (e.g., annual maximums). Each therapist’s designation is listed on our team page—please confirm your plan’s requirements and choose a clinician whose credentials match your coverage.
-
We recommend a 90-minute session for the first meeting to gather a full history. From there, we will collaboratively decide whether to continue with 90-minute sessions or adjust to 75 or 50 minutes, depending on what works best for the couple.
