Addiction & Substance Use
Substance use often begins as relief or connection and can become a cycle that narrows life.
We approach this work without shame or moral judgment. In our integrative depth approach, care attends to the present—safety, stability, and practical change—while exploring the meanings and conditions beneath use: pain and trauma, isolation, stress, identity pressures, grief, and patterns in relationships. We work collaboratively within a harm-reduction frame and support goals ranging from safer use to moderation to abstinence, at a pace that fits you.
“The question is not why the addiction, but why the pain.”
— Gabor Maté
What the work can include, blending practical and depth pathways:
Set goals (safer use, moderation, abstinence) and shape a plan that fits your values and context
Spot triggers and high-risk situations; build alternatives for soothing, reward, and connection
Ride craving/urge waves; treat slips/returns to use as learning rather than failure
Create safety measures (overdose prevention, safer-use strategies, supportive contacts) to reduce immediate harm
Restore daily anchors—sleep, nourishment, movement, work, community—so life grows larger than the substance
Pair accountability with self-compassion; loosen shame and self-attack
Understand what substances have been doing for you (numbing, belonging, energy, relief) and meet those needs more sustainably
Trace roots in trauma, attachment injuries, perfectionism, and role expectations; update rules that no longer serve
Shift relationship dynamics (enabling, secrecy, conflict) with boundaries, repair, and honest disclosure
Rebuild meaning via values, creativity, service, culture, and supportive community
Coordinate with family doctors, addiction medicine, or psychiatry when medical options would help
The aim is not just stopping a behaviour, but widening a life: more safety and choice now, and deeper change at the roots so freedom is sustainable.
